hint: 9 times out of 10, it's Vincent Van Gogh

Speaking of "free rice," did you know you could change the subjects now? You can do basic math or grammar or identify famous paintings, among other things. Most of the subjects seem extremely easy, but that's handy for kids who like to play. And I suppose they get harder if you keep going.

So what am I doing with my librarian skills these days? Mostly approving book authors over at paperbackswap.com; that is, figuring out whether the person named as the author of a particular book is credited correctly. No, several years of study are not really required for this task, but they don't hurt, either. A lot of it is looking at obscure small press items, which can require some actual research. Though I was amused today to be called on to approve Ruth Reichl, an author I would have thought was far beyond needing approval from the likes of me.

As a mildly useful, not completely mindless time waster, it probably ranks slightly below "free rice."
