more geek gear

T-shirts for fans of Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series.

I want "The Smoke Lives."

Evan says they seem a bit abstruse. Isn't that at least partially the point of fan gear?

randomness

Used books browsing today. I'm starting to hate seeing the same lousy books at the bookstore each time I go; I'm tempted to buy them up just so I can throw them away and never have to see them again.

The library book rack is more interesting, you never know what will turn up. Someone donated what was clearly the Agatha Christie collection of a lifetime, which is kind of sad to think about. Though I stopped weeping long enough to snag a copy of Come, Tell Me How You Live. I enjoy all of Christie's writing, including her nonfiction.

I've thought of the first book for my wedding cake: The Day I Became an Autodidact by Kendall Hailey, which I was lucky enough to read in the early years of being married. It's more about books than relationships, but offhandedly included the best information about marriage I have ever gotten, which goes something like this: "You can fall in and out of love with the same person endless times. People who understand that are the ones who stay married."

I will have to nag Evan to weigh in with a cake-book, but I can predict one of his choices: Time Pressure by Spider Robinson.

but of course the real question is...

... what books would you put on your wedding cake?

I will have to ponder this, especially since I got married 16 years ago (this Saturday) and what I would have chosen then is certainly not what I would choose now.
