we have Little House!
It's been ages since we've been able to get our son to listen to a chapter book. I tried Freddy. I tried Pippi. We tried books he chose himself at the library. Nothin'.
Then I got inspired and checked our library for adaptations of the Little House books. I found this:
We've been reading it for four nights. I think he likes the big size and the large, colored pictures, as well as the fact that all the stories are about Christmas. I'm hoping that when we're done, we can start on Little House in the Big Woods.
Being a parent continues to be humbling. I've always been snobby about adaptations. Next thing you know, I'll be letting him read the Magic Schoolbus books that aren't by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degan.

Congratulations!
I've also had some luck with books on tape. Some books need me, but others do better where he can push buttons. Diane Wynne Jones is one of these -- I think he got tired of me sneaking peaks ahead when I read those.
I remember looking through this book; isn't it a collection of the Christmas stories from the Little House books, just excerpted? I don't recall it being an adaptation. (If I'm right, that means you can continue to be snobby about adaptations.)
It is basically excerpts - but I am *really* snobby! ;-)
