Blog from the Windowsill

Does anyone think it would be fun to write about the trouble kid heavy readers get into? This theme was brought to my attention by A.S. Byatt (The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye) in her story about an oldest princess who sets out on a quest and realizes that she's doomed to fail because of her family positioning. (Her solution is walking out of that particular story and into another one!) And I realized that (as an older sister) I had internalized this "doomed to failure" scenario at a pretty early age. Other books I can think of that play with this are The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents (Terry Pratchett) and Howl's Moving Castle (Dianna Wynn Jones). Any others?

_Awake and Dreaming_ by Kit Pearson is about a character with major children's-book-influences going on.
